Provision of an onsite scientific support team at the research centre of a multinational pharmaceutical company
Challenge
A leading pharmaceutical company were experiencing a growing number of challenges at their rapidly expanding research centre. Critical but routine scientific activities were being carried out by all levels of scientific staff, whilst varied cell culture requirements lacked consistency and an expansion of automation suites highlighted further constraints. Meanwhile, any future expansion of a GCMS suite would likely cause future sample preparation issues.
Solution
A visit to the client’s facility and further discussions with their leadership team enabled Synergy to obtain a detailed understanding of the challenges and requirements, and propose the implementation of a dedicated scientific support team who would undertake a suite of essential laboratory functions.
Implementing Synergy’s expert scientific services and support, whilst operating in line with the client’s existing SOP’s, the team would integrate with research pipelines and onsite operational teams to improve research project progress. This dedicated support would free up time and provide flexibility for research scientists focused on the demands of numerous projects.
Additionally, the team would assist with sample preparation, ensuring all materials were available ahead of downstream requirements and enabling maximum daily research activity. Support in the GCMS area would also be provided by ensuring cross training and management of the team’s capacity during absences.
Outcome
Through the provision of an onsite scientific support team, several key benefits were observed. The Synergy Laboratory Management Services team:
- Added significant value to the client's ability to meet research targets, reducing contamination events and delays from sample or method process failures.
- Actively improve scientific support processes, quality and resource planning and identified areas where they could assist further across the centre.
- Helped improved support level processes to remove delays in sample, plate or reagent availability, whilst ensuring the working lab environment was well maintained.
Over the first few months, the team increased their knowledge and competence to further support priority research projects directly, enabling studies to continue during periods of key personnel absence.
After 18 months, as the client has expanded, the team doubled in size and provided valuable cross skilled support to most of the key studies and critical support to laboratory operations. Client feedback is extremely positive, not only on the team’s value to contributing to their targets but also on the team’s behaviours and competence.
